About Our School

Classroom

Why Families Choose Our Montessori School

Moving Grace Montessori School is located in the heart of the Lake Vista community of New Orleans. We are a private preschool serving students ages 3-6 years old. Our teachers are kind, loving, compassionate guides and enthusiastic about the Montessori Method. We seek to nurture and grow the whole child. Acknowledging and respecting that each child learns independently informs our individualized lesson planning. Building a sense of community through peace education, our school fosters an environment of kindness, tolerance, acceptance, and empathy.

We have one Moving Grace Montessori School classroom with 30 students, two co-lead teachers, and an assistant teacher. Our teacher-to-student ratio is one teacher to 10 students. Our maximum class size is 36 students, with two lead teachers and two assistant teachers.

Our Curriculum:

MGMS is a Montessori-based child-led learning environment. We have five main curriculum areas throughout the classroom: math, language, sensorial, practical life, and Science/ geography. We focus heavily on social and emotional development, peace education, and conflict resolution. At MGMS, we strive to spark each student's lifelong love of learning while developing kindness and empathy.

Parent Involvement:

MGMS hosts many community-building events throughout the year. Our parent league plays a significant part in planning and implementing these events. We also invite families to lead activities with the students throughout the year. One adult from each family must volunteer for at least one event throughout the school year. This helps to create a sense of community and collective responsibility.

Community Building:

MGMS hosts several family field trips, weekend fundraising events, and evening family and parent-only get-togethers throughout the year. These are great opportunities to meet the other school families and build a stronger sense of community. Participation in these events is not required but strongly encouraged. Additionally, we welcome family members to schedule a visit to read a book, share a hobby, share a special part of their culture or heritage, or even a family tradition.  We also welcome family members to sign up to help with class parties and school events.

Assessments:

While MGMS does not participate in testing, we constantly assess the success of our lessons through observations. Teachers record lessons and observations on Transparent Classroom, and parents have access to their student’s records and pictures.  Parents are invited to meet with the teachers twice a year for parent-teacher conferences to discuss success and areas for improvement. Teachers can meet with you throughout the year if any concerns arise.

Lunch and snacks:

Children bring their lunch from home daily.

The school provides morning and aftercare snacks.

The students provide an afternoon snack. A snack calendar is provided, and each student will bring a snack four times throughout the year.

Communication:

The school uses email as its primary form of communication with parents and guardians. Our teachers use Transparent Classroom to record student activities and progress.  The school phone is a cell phone that accepts calls and texts. The school also has a private Facebook page for families to see pictures of their students in action and get reminders about special events.
